Baseball player Barry Bonds, 37, has been a San Francisco Giant since 1993. On October 5, he became a giant figure in baseball history. He hit his 71st and 72nd home runs of the year and became baseball's new home run king!
Bonds has hit more home runs in a single season than any other baseball player. He broke St. Louis Cardinal Mark McGwire's 1998 record of 70 homers. After belting out numbers 71 and 72, Bonds went on to hit one more home run. He hit his 73rd in the team's final game on October 7.
Though the Giants beat the Dodgers 2-1, the team did not make it to the playoffs. Bonds took the disappointment in stride: "This was a great, great way to end it."
Baseball is in Bonds' blood. His father is former Major Leaguer Bobby Bonds. His cousin is Yankee great Reggie Jackson. The slugger's godfather is baseball legend Willie Mays, a Hall of Famer.
These days fans are comparing Bonds to another home run king, Babe Ruth. This season, Bonds broke Ruth's single-season record for walks. Bonds, though, isn't sure he'll remain king: "I wouldn't be surprised if someone breaks 73."
