Millions of girls headed to offices, labs, factories and firehouses last Thursday for Take Our Daughters to Work Day. It is a chance for girls to visit the place where a parent or another adult they know works. The Ms. Foundation for Women began the program in 1993 to show girls the many careers that are open to them.
Before the 1960s, many jobs were closed to women. Things have changed! Next year, something else will change: Boys will be included in the program. The day will officially become Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day!
"Girls and boys can learn to work together to bring about a more equitable world at home, at school and at work," says Marie C. Wilson, Ms. Foundation's president. The change will please critics. Many felt it was unfair to exclude boys.
Not Talia Blau, 12. Last week, she learned about magazines at TIME, where her dad works. (TIME and TFK are part of the same company.) She doesn't want her brother to tag along next year. Says Talia: "They should have a separate day for boys."
