Dear Readers

Nine years ago, I was offered a spectacular opportunity. The editor of TIME, where I had worked for many years as a writer and editor, asked me to take a crack at creating a kids' version of the magazine. With a tiny team but loads of enthusiasm, I set to work. As a mother of three, I just knew that kids would love the news if it were presented to them in a fresh and lively way.

The result was the magazine you hold in your hands. We started publishing TIME For Kids in September 1995. That year, we had 700,000 readers. Today, we have three different editions of TFK and 4 million readers--about as many as TIME itself!

Now that my baby is so grown up, I've decided to return to TIME. I am pleased to announce that Martha Pickerill will be the new editor of TFK. It has been a joy and a privilege to bring you the news each week. I've learned so much from you, our readers.

Have a wonderful summer, and please keep on reading!
