On March 30, President George W. Bush signed a bill into law that will help protect children across the U.S. The new law will establish a nationwide "Amber Alert" system to stop kidnappers in their tracks.
Already used in 41 states, the Amber Alert system quickly broadcasts news of missing children to the public over radio, TV and electronic highway signs. It has helped rescue several kidnapping victims.
President Bush says the new law will provide police with "millions of allies in the search for missing children." It also increases penalties for crimes against kids.
"It's bittersweet," said Donna Norris, the mother of the girl for whom the alert is named. "It's a chance to save other children, and I'm proud of it."
