The price of getting gas is getting ghastly! The nationwide average for unleaded fuel has risen to $1.54 a gallon. Last March it was just 91 cents. That's the biggest 12-month gas-price increase in the nation's history.
Why have prices soared? Gas is made from oil. Half the oil in the U.S. comes from other countries, and these countries have lowered their oil production. When there's limited oil, it can be sold at a high price. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) sets the price for oil. Its members will meet on March 27. Will they cut the price? Americans hope so. Last Thursday truck drivers drove their rigs into Washington to urge a temporary halt to taxes on gas.
