TFK Q & A

WHO: Julie Andrews Edwards

CLAIM TO FAME: The star of Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music and The Princess Diaries; author of children's books, including Mandy and the new book Simeon's Gift. See Kid Reporter Carson Satterfield's full interview at timeforkids.com/andrews.

Q
Why did you decide to write for children?

A
I wrote Mandy for my eldest daughter, Jennifer. It took about two years. I so enjoyed that and just wanted to keep writing afterward.

Q
Do you ever get writer's block?

A
Oh, yeah. I'm writing a book at the moment, and I have a deadline for it, which is next year. There are days when I'm really panicked. Lately, I've been telling myself, "Just do it." I can always rewrite, always go back and work on particular pieces.

Q
You performed in the classic musicals Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. Which would you say was your favorite?

A
I like each one for a different reason. Each has a simple, special memory. I just started another movie, Princess Diaries 2. We'll be filming in November.

Q
Which do you enjoy most, singing, writing or acting?

A
You know what I really enjoy? Being allowed to do all those things. How lucky can I be to try all of those things and get away with it?
