Shhh! Don't tell anyone. The world's tallest tree is in a park near Ukiah, California. It's hard to keep the location of a giant tree a secret, but for three years, officials in Montgomery Woods State Reserve have tried. They're afraid that crowds of visitors would harm the big tree.
The coastal redwood known as the Mendocino Tree stands a whopping 367 feet 6 inches. That's 62 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty! In 1998 The Guinness Book of Records listed it as the world's tallest living tree. The book said the tree grows in Montgomery Woods but did not give its exact location.
The secret was safe until last June, when a California newspaper printed a picture of the tree. Curious visitors began coming to the park. The only park employee who knows the tree's exact location is ranger Karl Poppelreiter, and he's not telling. Says Poppelreiter: "We want people to see the forest and not just the tree!"
