Huge, Rare Gems Twinkle Side by Side

The Dresden brooch

What’s rarer than the Dresden Green, the largest and finest natural green diamond ever found? Seeing it displayed beside one of the largest known blue diamonds, the Hope diamond! Visitors to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., now have the chance to do just that. Jeweler Ronald Winston persuaded a museum in Germany to lend the green jewel to the Smithsonian for this display, which runs until January 10, 2001.

Winston’s father Harry gave the Smithsonian the Hope in 1958. It’s the world’s most viewed museum object. Both the Hope and Dresden Green are said to have come from India’s Golconda Mines. Now they are reunited.
