The world's richest man is giving up some of his cash to help the world's kids.
Microsoft Corporation's chairman, Bill Gates, announced last Wednesday that he and his wife Melinda are donating $100 million to help protect children in poor countries from deadly infectious diseases.
The Gates gift will go to the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health, a nonprofit health group based in Seattle, Washington, near Microsoft's headquarters.
"Our program has a simple goal: to make vaccines you and I take for granted available to children regardless of where they live," said Gates.
More than 2 million children in poor countries die each year, mostly in Asia and Africa, from respiratory, intestinal and liver diseases. Fortunately, most American babies are routinely given shots that prevent them from getting these diseases.
