Spotlight: Shana Matthews

Science is all around you, says Shana Matthews, 14, from Palm Bay, Florida. "Everything you see and do has something to do with it." This junior scientist just won a $10,000 scholarship, the first prize for Grades 5 through 8 in the Discovery Young Scientist Challenge. The week-long competition was held at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Shana investigated helpful products that can be developed from E. coli (Ee cole-eye), a common germ.

Shana's winning ways don't stop there. She also won the Travel Channel Dream Science Trip. She asked to visit the Roslin Institute, a research lab in Scotland. There she'll meet Dolly, the first cloned sheep! "It's a real honor," she says.
