Lots of kids were out collecting pennies for charity on Halloween. But could anyone possibly have more cents than Matthew Nonnemacher, 10, of Hazleton, Pennsylvania? Matthew started placing collection jars in schools and stores around his town a few months ago. The jars had labels asking people to drop in their spare pennies. By late October, he had raised $18,196.91. That's almost 2 million pennies--with some other coins mixed in!
Matthew turned the money over to the United Way charities, which will use it to buy food, clothes and shelter for needy people. Says Matthew: "It feels good to help people."
