Mason Park, 9, is taking steps to help more than 18 million Americans, including his grandfathers, who have diabetes. The disease makes it hard for a person's body to break down sugar, which is needed for energy. On November 13, Mason will take part in America's Walk for Diabetes in San Antonio, Texas. His goal is to raise $10,000, mostly from donations. That is twice as much as he collected last year, when he was a spokes-person for the event.
Last summer, Mason won a $6,000 scholarship from Kohl's Department Stores for his volunteer work. He will use the money to help pay for college. "I want to be a scientist and do research on diabetes," Mason told TFK. "I want to find a cure." For now, he hopes to inspire other kids to follow in his footsteps.
