First Lady Hillary Clinton stepped out of her husband's shadow last week with a triumph in New York's Senate race. She is the first First Lady ever to be elected to public office! Senators serve for six years at a time; there are two from each state.
In her victory speech, Clinton said to fellow Democrats, "Thank you for seeing the possibility of what we can do together."
Democrats also made news in Missouri. Governor Mel Carnahan, who died last month, won a Senate seat. The new Governor asked Carnahan's widow Jean to serve in her husband's place.

In another big race, Republican George Allen defeated Charles S. Robb. Robb, a Democrat, was the first Virginia Senator to lose a re-election bid in more than 20 years.
With the Washington State race still undecided last Friday, there were 49 Democrats and 50 Republicans in the Senate. It hasn't been so evenly split in nearly 50 years. "Things will only be accomplished if we work together," says Senator Robert Torricelli of New Jersey.
