He doesn't wear a pot on his head, and he doesn't scatter apple seeds. So why is Andrew Carroll known as the Johnny Appleseed of books? Carroll is scattering seeds of literacy as the executive director of the American Poetry and Literacy Project, or APL. April is National Poetry Month, and he is traveling to 30 cities across the U.S. for the Great APLseed Giveaway. Carroll plans to give out 100,000 free books of poetry. "Poetry is often seen as the vegetable of the literary world," he says. "But it can be dessert!"
