Careful with that cupcake! Take a good look at that Twinkie! Last week 13 kinds of Hostess treats and Dolly Madison cupcakes were pulled from store shelves in 21 states. Workers at a Schiller Park, Illinois, factory that makes the treats may have accidentally exposed them to a dangerous substance called asbestos. Asbestos was once used as insulation. Then researchers discovered that it can cause cancer.
Interstate Brands makes Hostess and Dolly Madison foods. The company decided to recall the snacks, even though they may not be contaminated. "We are taking this extremely seriously and want to make sure that the public knows about it, and (the cakes) are taken from the shelf immediately," said Illinois state health spokesman Tom Schafer.
The snacks from the plant were sold in 21 states, mostly in the middle of the country. If you have a Hostess snack cake or Dolly Madison cupcake with the number 57 as part of its expiration date, return it unopened to the store. You should get your money back.
