Last week Hillary Rodham Clinton had a heart-to-heart talk with a group of kids in Boston, Massachusetts. The subject was one that President and Mrs. Clinton plan to focus on a lot in coming months: racism.
The Boston area's professional sports teams started a program in 1994 to help middle and high school students fight hate and racism. Besides the First Lady, about 10,000 kids took part this year.
Student after student told of run-ins with prejudice. A girl told the group an anti-Jewish joke that someone shouted at her. Another spoke of the tensions between Asian, black and white kids on the school bus.
Mrs. Clinton's advice: "It doesn't work to stand there and trade insults," she said. "There are going to be people who are so unhappy that they won't be able to accept other people. We need to surround those people with our own respect and love so they are rendered as harmless as possible."
