Icy Antarctica is home to penguins, whales and sea birds. In some places, the ice is more than two miles deep. Cool, says Californian Sharon Ungersma, 19. This month, she and 34 other young explorers from 18 countries are checking out the frozen continent. "I can't wait to set foot where hardly anyone has been!" Sharon told TFK.
The students, ages 16 to 24, were chosen because of their dedication to the environment and good grades. They will meet polar explorer Robert Swan, who will have become the first person to walk across Antarctica when he meets up with the team on January 9. You can see Antarctica too by visiting www.onestep.tandem.com (the project's Website).
