Dole Jumps Ahead Of The Pack

Bob Dole had that winning feeling last week. He won all 10 primaries and caucuses held on "Junior Tuesday," March 5. It is called Junior Tuesday because it's not quite so big a day as "Super Tuesday," March 12, when seven very big primaries take place.

Dole also captured the New York primary held on Thursday. That gave him a total of 383 delegates out of the 996 needed to win the Republican nomination. Steve Forbes was trailing behind with just 72 delegates, while Pat Buchanan had 62.

Before Dole's big win, lots of people were saying that Buchanan, Forbes or even Lamar Alexander might grab the nomination. But after Tuesday's loss, Alexander dropped out of the race. As Dole says, "One day can be a lifetime in this business."

Buchanan and Forbes admit they have little hope of winning, but they are hanging in. They say that even if they do not win the nomination, they may still be able to influence the party's decisions, including the choice of a candidate for Vice President.

Dole has hinted that he might choose General Colin Powell as his vice-presidential candidate. For now, Dole is glad to be the clear leader. "We're on a roll!" he said on board his campaign airplane, and he rolled an orange down the aisle.
