Beep, beep! Many Americans just got the green light to drive faster. President Clinton signed a bill that ends the national speed limit of 55 miles per hour. That limit has been in place since 1974. Now each state will set its own top speed.
Clinton, like many others, is concerned that faster speeds will mean more car accidents. He signed the bill anyway because it provides $6 billion for badly needed highway improvements.
Many states will keep cruising at 55, but some are raising the limit to 70 or 75 as fast as they can. And look out if you cross the road in Montana. During the daytime, it will have no speed limit!
