On February 11, Ann Bancroft of the U.S. and Liv Arnesen of Norway became the first women to cross the Antarctic landmass-1,688 miles-on skis (see An Icy Trek 1/19/01)! Lack of winds forced them to fly the final 470 miles to McMurdo Station. "We're tired and a little thinner," said the weary but delighted Bancroft.
