FAMILY VACATION PLANNER

Whether it's recycling, raising money, or participating in civic events, you can donate your help, your voice, your feelings, and your creativity to make a difference on your next trip.

Here are some ideas and organizations that can help you do good on the go.

UNICEF is the United Nations organization that looks after the world's children. Save all those pennies, nickels and quarters you find beneath your car's floor mats and consider contributing to the "Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF" campaign. Since 1950, this program has been raising money for less fortunate children around the globe. This year, money collected will go towards helping the children of Iraq. Learn more by visiting the UNICEF website.

While you're on the road, keep a journal of your sights, thoughts, emotions, and reactions to what you see. Too much litter on the highway? People driving too fast? Someone singing WAY off key? Is there something you can do to help (besides earplugs)? Share your notes with friends and family and consider starting your own community service project or newsletter to help solve the problem. You can even share your ideas with your elected officials in Congress. Find your Congressional representatives and learn how to contact them.

Road trips often include a stop at one of our beautiful national parks. You don't need a green outfit, a pointy hat, or the ability to make fire with sticks to play a big part in protecting them. Just become a Junior Park Ranger.

Did you know on average Americans generate 3.5 pounds of waste per day, producing about 154 million tons of garbage in the U.S. every year? And you thought YOUR room was messy! Help clean the scene by using disposable plates, cups and utensils. Instead of buying individually wrapped juice boxes, use a thermos or try packing your food in a reusable plastic container rather than disposable plastic wrap or sandwich bags. This will help when someone accidentally sits on your sandwich, too.

Run your own "A-Thon." Pick an activity you can do while in the car (such as reading or counting certain objects) or on vacation (like reading books) and ask people to sponsor you. Donate all of the money to your favorite charity. (No, your CD collection fund DOESN'T count!)

Remember that your next vacation stop is still someone else's backyard. Save them the trouble of cleaning up after you by throwing away your garbage and keeping places you visit just as you found them. You'll be thankful the day your room gets declared a national historical site (if it's not declared a natural disaster area first!).
