The children of Afghanistan need your help, and President Bush is asking America's kids to rise to the challenge.

In a news conference on October 11, he spoke directly to kids across the country about a new relief effort supervised by the Red Cross. "We are asking every child in America to earn or give a dollar that will be used to provide food and medical help for the children of Afghanistan," he said. "Their country has been through a great deal of war and suffering. Many children there are starving and are severely malnourished. One in three Afghan children is an orphan, almost half suffer chronic malnutrition, and we can and must help them."

To support his relief effort, send your dollar in an envelope marked as follows:

America's Fund for Afghan Children

"I hope school classes or Boys and Girl Scout troops, other youth organizations will participate in any way to raise the money to send to the children. Wash a car. Do a yard for a neighbor," the President urged. "Ultimately, one of the best weapons, one of the truest weapons that we have against terrorism is to show the world the true strength of character and kindness of the American people."

Small contributions like a dollar can make a big difference. But if you want to raise even more money, here are some ideas to help get you started:

  • Skip-a-snack: If you normally buy candy, soda or other snacks, donate the change you would have spent. Pick a day or a week when you and your classmates can do it together!
  • Have a raffle: Fill a jar with cookies, candies or other goodies and sell chances to guess the number of items in the jar. The winner will receive the whole jar, treats and all.
  • Recycle: Collect aluminum cans and redeem them at your local recycling center. Put a container in the lunchroom for collecting the cans.
  • Hold a car wash: This is a fun way to raise money and get your friends wet!
  • Organize a group sale: Have students in every class bring in things they no longer want and sell them at a yard sale. You may also want to express your creativity by selling cards, crafts and baked treats you've made yourselves.
  • Sell candy-grams: Create and sell personal messages decorated with special treats for the holidays. For Halloween, you can use lollipops covered with tissues to make ghosts.
