Shahrak District
The Minaret (“beacon” in Arabic) of Jam, pictured, is found in a deep river valley between mountains in the Shahrak district in Afghanistan’s Ghor Province. Built in 1194 by the Ghurid dynasty, the brick tower stands 210 feet tall and was once attached to a mosque. The Islamic structure likely marks the site of the ancient city of Firuzkuh. The Minaret of Jam is considered a UNESCO World Heritage site for its elaborate decoration and architecture. (THOMAS J. ABERCROMBIE —NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC/GETTY IMAGES)
