The name Patagonia is believed to come from the Spanish word Patagones, which is what Spanish explorers call the region's original settlers, the Tehuelche Indians. According to one account, explorer Ferdinand Magellan used that name because the appearance of the Tehuelche Indians reminded him of Patagon, a dog-headed monster in a 16th-century Spanish romance novel.
