Bahir Dar is located on the southern shores of Lake Tana, Ethiopia's largest lake. It serves as the main reservoir for the Blue Nile River. The lake's surface covers 1,418 square miles, with several inhabited islands throughout. Fishermen on the lake still use traditional canoe-like boats called Tankwa that are made from papyrus.
