Meteora
The monasteries of Meteora are among the most amazing and unusual sights in Greece. Built into and on top of huge, natural rock formations, they sheltered monks from invasions at the end of the 14th century. In the past, monks reached the monasteries by climbing removable ladders or being hauled up in nets. Today people can visit them by climbing steps cut into the rock. (PETER ADAMS—GETTY IMAGES)
