Reykjavik
Iceland's largest and most modern city, Reykjavik (ray-kyuh-vik) is also the world's northernmost capital. It is also the place where Vikings first settled. Reykjavik is stretched across a peninsula and has views of the Atlantic Ocean and mountains from most angles. During the summer, people sit outside at midnight and watch the sun set just below the horizon before it rises again minutes later. (RENE FREDERICK—GETTY IMAGES)
