Mt. Fuji Mt. Fuji is Japan's highest mountain, standing at over 12,000 feet. The most popular symbol of Japan, the mountain is called "Fujisan" by many Japanese people. (Adding 'san' at the end of a word shows affection and respect.) The perfectly symmetrical volcano was once considered a holy mountain. It last erupted in 1707, covering the streets of 18th century Tokyo in ash. The snowcapped mountain is no longer an active volcano. (PETER ADAMSGETTY IMAGES) |
