Amman
In Jordan's capital, Amman, the Abu Darwish Mosque is a most unusual site. It sits atop Mount Jebel al-Ashrafiyeh, the city's highest elevation. Built in 1961 by Circassian refugees who had fled Russia, its black-and-white checkered facade and the odd chess pieces on top of its walls are eye-catching and unique. At night, the mosque is lit up by a beautiful display of multi-colored lights. (GETTY IMAGES)
