Great Rift Valley
Giraffes, the world's tallest animals, graze on the floor of the Great Rift Valley. This famous valley is a huge 5,400-mile slash in the Earth's surface created by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions many years ago. It is known as the "cradle of mankind" by explorers who've found fossils of early human ancestors there. (NIGEL HICKS—GETTY IMAGES)
