Veracruz is a vibrant port city situated on the Gulf Coast of Mexico. Spanish explorer Hernando Cortes founded the seaport in 1519. The harbor served as an important base for the Spaniards' expeditions through Mexico. Also, its location on the coast once made Veracruz a target for pirate raids and invasions. Today, the busy port is known as much for its turbulent history as for its rich culture and traditions.
