Lake Titicaca The Incas believed that Lake Titicaca gave birth to their civilization. It was the most sacred body of water in the Inca Empire. At 12,725 feet above sea level, it is the highest lake in the world and the center of a region where thousands of farmers fish in its icy waters. Today, the lake acts as the natural separation between Peru and Bolivia. (GAVIN HELLIERGETTY IMAGES) |
