President Barack Obama’s third year in the White House was filled with setbacks and successes. Overseas, the Commander in Chief oversaw many military triumphs. In May, Obama oversaw the Navy SEALs who killed terrorist leader Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. The President also helped topple Libya’s corrupt leader, Muammar Gaddafi. In October, Obama declared an end to America’s nine-year war in Iraq. He announced that all U.S. troops would return home from Iraq by the end of 2011.

Things were tougher for the President at home, where he battled Congress on the U.S. budget and economic recovery. Obama presented the American Jobs Act, a plan to create jobs and save the economy. He also reformed the college loan system, hoping to make college more affordable for Americans. Obama is now working on his reelection campaign for the 2012 election.

Obama was born in Hawaii in 1961. His father, Barack Obama Sr., was born and raised in Kenya, and his mother, Ann Dunham, grew up in Kansas. After graduating from Columbia University and Harvard Law School, Obama worked as a lawyer in Chicago, Illinois. In 1996, he was elected to the Illinois State Senate, and in 2004, won a seat on the U.S. Senate. He ran a historic presidential campaign in 2008, receiving the most votes of any candidate in U.S. history and becoming the nation’s first African-American President. Obama and his wife, Michelle, are the parents of two daughters, Malia, and Sasha.

For working towards economic stability and promoting democracy abroad, President Barack Obama is a nominee for TFK's 2011 Person of the Year.
