Alvin, Simon and Theodore get stranded on a desert island in their new movie, "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked."

Alvin, Simon and Theodore are hitting the high seas in their latest big-screen adventure. In Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, opening December 16, the furry trio and their gal pals, The Chipettes, set sail on a luxury cruise. But the trip goes south when Alvin’s usual antics accidentally get them tossed overboard and stuck on a desert island.

Actor/singer Jesse McCartney returns as the voice of youngest Chipmunk Theodore. What does McCartney think Theodore would do if he were in charge, instead of Alvin? Learn the answer to this and other questions TFK had for the star in the Q&A below.

TFK:

How does it feel to step into Theodore’s shoes again?

JESSE MCCARTNEY:

It’s great. Growing up, I was a huge fan of the Chipmunks. Every Saturday morning, I would sit down with my cereal and watch the Chipmunks on television. It’s kind of crazy that I’m the voice of Theodore now. I’m just so excited to be a part of this for the third time around.

TFK:

In Chipwrecked, the Chipmunks go on a cruise. What’s Theodore most looking forward to?

JESSE:

Theodore is most looking forward to going on the cruise and looking for lost treasure. I think he’s also excited to hang out with Eleanor. He’s still trying to win her heart.

TFK:

What kinds of adventures do the Chipmunks go on in the movie?

JESSE:

Well, without giving too much away, they’re looking to retrieve Simon, whom they lose for a while on the ship. Theodore’s biggest thing is making sure that he always has his family. Alvin is the one who’s always causing trouble, and Simon is the brain of the family. But Theodore is there to make sure everyone sticks together. He’s the glue.

TFK:

How do you think Theodore would do as the leader?

JESSE:

Well, there would be a lot of eating. I think the other two Chipmunks would be a lot fatter, if it were up to Theodore! He secretly wants them to be called Theo’s Trio. He would have a big letter “T” on his shirt, and he would give Alvin the green shirt.

TFK:

After voicing Theodore for three films now, do you find you’re still learning new things about him?

JESSE:

I’m pretty tapped into him now as far as knowing the character. But from a technical standpoint, it never gets easier. When you’re recording, there’s a fine line between doing a chipmunk voice and sounding like an old grandma. You have to have a certain tone, pitch and speed when you speak. There’s a certain rhythm to the voice. You have to speak really slowly, but with the same emphasis and intensity that you would a normal conversation. It’s funny. You sound like a crazy person until they speed it up.

TFK:

Do you think the Chipmunks will be singing one of your songs some day?

JESSE:

I don’t know. That remains to be seen, but hopefully! It would be an honor. The Chipmunks are way bigger than any of my songs.

TFK:

Who was your favorite Chipmunk when you were growing up?

JESSE:

My favorite Chipmunk was definitely Theodore, but I’m probably a little biased now that I’m playing him.
