The Lone Ranger and Tonto, his Native American companion, are a well-known partnership in American folklore. The injustice-fighting characters first became popular in a long-running children's radio show in 1933. Over the next few decades, they went on to appear in multiple books, TV shows and movies. This summer, the filmmakers behind the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise are bringing the characters back to life in a new Old West adventure. In Disney’s The Lone Ranger, Armie Hammer stars as John Reid, a city lawyer who returns to the West to serve as a Texas Ranger. John Reid joins forces with Tonto, played by Johnny Depp, and becomes the infamous masked hero while seeking justice for the murder of his brother.
Did You Know?
Johnny Depp created the look of Tonto's makeup while on the set of Alice in Wonderland. "Johnny sent me a photograph of exactly the way he looks in the movie," producer Jerry Bruckheimer told TFK. "I didn't recognize him in the photograph." Depp told Entertainment Weekly magazine that he was inspired by a painting by artist Kirby Sattler called "I Am Crow."
