A Longer School Day

Five American states extend the school day for select public schools

December 14, 2012

If you live in Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York or Tennessee, rest up. On December 3, the five states announced they will extend classroom hours in 40 public schools. Starting in 2013, these schools will add at least 300 hours of learning time to their academic calendars. Programs will vary by school district.

"Adding meaningful in-school hours is a critical investment that better prepares children to be successful in the 21st century," U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said in a statement. Do you agree?
