A Longer School Day

Five states add classroom hours for select public schools.

December 14, 2012

If you live in Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York or Tennessee, rest up. On December 3, the five states announced there will soon be longer school days. Starting in 2013, 40 of these states' public schools will each add at least 300 hours of learning time to their calendars.

"Adding meaningful in-school hours is a critical investment that better prepares children to be successful in the 21st century," said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.
