Mystery Person

Guess this week's mystery person.

I was born in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, on July 31, 1923. Science was my passion, and I earned a degree in chemistry from what is now Carnegie Mellon University. In 1964, I developed a strong fiber called Kevlar. Today, Kevlar is used in everything from bulletproof vests to bicycles and golf clubs. Who am I?
