On March 18, officials of the 2012 London Games unveiled a map of the Olympic Torch relay route. The 70-day trip kicks off May 19 at Land’s End, the westernmost tip of England. It ends on July 27 at the Olympic Stadium in London. The 8,000-mile journey around Great Britain will also include a stop in Dublin, Ireland.
A total of 8,000 volunteers will carry the flame in the relay. Among them are war veterans, schoolchildren and other members of the public. The youngest of the group is Dominic John MacGowan, 11. The oldest is Diana Gould, who turns 100 on May 23. “As long as the walk is on the flat [ground], I think I’ll be okay,” Gould says.
