Wrestler John Cena’s catchphrase may be “You can’t see me,” but even he didn’t see what was coming when he was greeted with a shower of slippery slime at the 2017 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. The show was held on March 11 at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, California. Hosted by Cena, who is also an actor and a rapper, the event honored the year’s biggest names in film, television, music, and the web.

Actor Aidan Gallagher, who was nominated for Favorite Male TV Star for his role on Nicky, Ricky, Dicky, and Dawn, talked to TFK on the orange carpet just before the event. He commented on the annual award show’s infamous slimy salute to its honored guests. “The slime is sort of like warm and gooey,” Gallagher said. “Though sometimes, it’s cold and gooey, and that’s not good—that’s a bad experience.”

What could be even more exciting than the slime treatment? At the Kids' Choice Awards, kids pick the winners. In the weeks prior to the show, kids cast their votes online to crown their favorite TV and web personalities. "Kids have a voice, a really loud voice, and they deserve to have their own award show,” former Big Time Rush member Kendall Schmidt told TFK.

Creativity on Display

As showtime approached, TFK talked to celebrities including singer Jojo Siwa, actress Brec Bassinger, reality TV personality Abby Lee Miller, and Grumpy Cat. Jojo, who won Favorite Viral Music Artist, designed her own slime-inspired jacket. “I just wanted to be ‘Rainbow Brite Unicorn,’” she said.

Actor Casey Simpson, of Mr. Lemoncello’s Library, even let TFK sign his arm cast, while Favorite Viral Music Artist nominee Jacob Sartorius revealed he is a TFK reader. "TIME For Kids, I feel honored to be in your magazine,” he said. “When I was in school, we read TIME For Kids. Read TIME For Kids!”

The excitement on the orange carpet was palpable, especially among the nominees. “When I found out I was nominated, I clicked my heels and did a cartwheel,” Lizzy Greene said. The actress was nominated for Favorite Female TV Star for her role on Nicky, Ricky, Dicky, and Dawn. Riele Downs, who plays Charlotte on Henry Danger, was thrilled that the series was nominated for Favorite Kids TV show. She also designed her own ensemble for the event—a gold dress decked out in stars and intricate embroidery.

Fan Favorites

The night’s biggest winners included Favorite Female TV Star, Zendaya of K.C. Undercover, and Favorite Male TV Star, Jace Norman of Henry Danger. Fuller House won Favorite TV Show (Family). Fifth Harmony scored Favorite Music Group and their song, “Work From Home,” featuring Ty Dolla $ign, won Favorite Song. Little Mix netted Favorite Global Music Star. Shawn Mendes and Selena Gomez nabbed Favorite Male and Female Singers, respectively. Kevin Hart took home two awards—Favorite Villain and Most Wanted Pet—for voicing the role of Snowball in The Secret Life of Pets. Hart also won the BFF (Best Friends Forever) award with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Ellen DeGeneres had a good reason to smile. She won Favorite Voice from an Animated Movie for voicing Dory in Finding Dory, and the film won Favorite Animated Movie. DeGeneres was also a recipient of the #Squad award, which she shared with her Finding Dory castmates. In her acceptance speech, DeGeneres had the audience take an oath: "I am good enough, just like I am. I am supposed to be unique and different. I’m not supposed to be like everybody else. I promise to be kind to people. I promise to brush my teeth every day, and floss. And watch the Ellen show every single day.”

The night’s festivities also included musical performances by Machine Gun Kelly, Camila Cabello, and Little Mix. Nickelodeon showed exclusive movie clips from the upcoming summer blockbusters Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Wonder Woman. Among the other highlights: a heated arm wrestle between Cena and the cast of Nicky, Ricky, Dicky, and Dawn, hosted by DJ Khaled; a T-shirt toss by Big Sean and Bethany Mota; and an intense hip-hop dance battle between Cena and Nick Cannon.

And, of course, there was green slime—and plenty of it. Demi Lovato, Kevin Hart, and Chris Pratt were among the stars honored this year with a slime shower. As Cena puts it, “I have just turned into John Greena. Thank you Nickelodeon. Thank you Kids’ Choice. Tonight was incredible. I had the time of my life.”
