Justin Bieber made a surprise appearance at the end of the show to accept the award for Favorite Male Artist. But it didn't save him, or KCA host Will Smith, from a good sliming.

On Saturday, Hollywood’s biggest stars came out in full force as Nickelodeon rolled out the orange carpet for the 2012 Kids’ Choice Awards (KCAs), in Los Angeles, California. The awards show is famous for presenting winners with orange blimps in place of gold trophies, and of course, for drenching guests with green slime. Fans decide which stars go home with a coveted blimp by voting for their favorites online. A record-breaking 220 million votes were cast this year in 20 categories.

Ten-time KCA winner Will Smith kept the crowd entertained as this year’s host. The Men In Black 3star opened the 25th annual show with an extra special entrance. He arrived at the arena by blimp, and then was lowered to the stage from the ceiling. As Smith performed the song “Can U Handle This,” neon-green goop splashed onto an unsuspecting audience below. “Nobody is safe from the slime!” Smith declared. He promised more slimings before the night’s end.

And the Blimp Goes to…

The winners were announced in unique ways. The band Big Time Rush learned they’d won for Favorite Music Group when giant photos of their heads popped up in the audience. A sword swallower revealed Twilight star Kristen Stewart as the top choice for Favorite Movie Actress. And the cast of Victorious charged the stage after presenter Zac Efron revealed the winner for Favorite TV Show on his shirt.

First Lady Michelle Obama presented this year’s Big Help Award to country music star Taylor Swift for her commitment to giving back. Obama is a past recipient of the prize. “It is my great privilege to present the award to someone who has rocketed to the top of the music industry, but still keeps her feet on the ground,” the First Lady said. Swift thanked her fans and took time to recognize other young do-gooders. “I see you out there making a difference, and I am so proud of you,” she said.

Other big winners included Selena Gomez, who won for Favorite TV Actress and Favorite Female Singer; Adam Sandler, the pick for Favorite Movie Actor; and Katy Perry, who won for Favorite Voice In an Animated Movie for The Smurfs. “The only reason why I’m still here today—and remember this—is because I’ve never grown up!” Perry told the audience. The singer was presented with the award after performing her hit single, “Part of Me.”

British pop sensations One Direction also took to the stage. Celebrities and kids alike danced in the aisles as the boys belted out an energetic performance of their song, “What Makes You Beautiful.” The band will make a special guest appearance on the April 7 episode of iCarly.

Partners in Slime

Host Will Smith guaranteed record amounts of slime this year, and he kept his word. Halle Berry was the night’s first sliming victim. KCA presenter Chris Colfer, of Glee, and Favorite Buttkicker winner Taylor Lautner also got doused with green gunk.

But the biggest sliming is always saved for last. That honor went to Justin Bieber this year. The pop superstar made a surprise appearance late in the show to accept the blimp for Favorite Male Artist. Smith held on tightly to Bieber as bucket loads of slime spewed out across the stage, soaking them both. It was a grand gooey finale to close out the big show.

Don’t worry if you missed the festivities the first time around. A half-hour special, KCA: One More Slime!, featuring highlights and bonus footage from the show, will air April 3 on Nickelodeon. For a complete list of KCA winners, visit nick.com/kids-choice-awards.
