Some members of Girls Inc. in New York City got a special treat last week from Disney Channel. Girls Inc. is a nonprofit organization that offers programs to help girls develop skills in leadership, economics, and more. On June 17, young members were given a private early screening of Zapped, a new Disney Channel Original Movie, at the Disney Channel offices in New York City. After watching the film, the fans were surprised with an appearance by the movie’s stars, Shake It Up’s Zendaya, 17, and Lab Rat’s Spencer Boldman, 21. “I love meeting people and fans,” Spencer told TFK before meeting the kids. “It’s so awesome to have the kids come. I’m excited to meet them and see if they liked it.”

During the screening, TFK spoke to Zendaya and Boldman about the new movie, which premieres Friday, June 27 at 8 p.m. ET on Disney Channel. Zapped stars Zendaya as a teen dancer named Zoey Stevens. Zoey’s life is upended when she moves in with a new stepdad, stepbrothers, and (male) stepdog. She finds herself surrounded by boys who are out of her control, both at home and at her new school. In hopes that she can wrangle just one of them, she downloads a dog-training app for the family pooch. But then a crazy accident turns her phone into a tool that can control all the boys around her. Zoey thinks she can use the app for good, but she must learn to accept others as they are. Boldman plays Zoey’s crush, Jackson Kale.

Actress Zendaya plays Zoey Stevens, a girl who attemps to use a magical phone app to control the boys around her, in Zapped.

Zendaya

TFK:

Other than both of you being dancers, how do you relate to Zoey?

ZENDAYA:

I feel like we’ve all been in a position where we’ve dealt with change. I’ve had to go to a new school, and I had to move to LA, so I completely understand feeling like I’m not in control of my own life.

TFK:

Do you agree that boys can be like dogs?

ZENDAYA:

I like to give boys the benefit of the doubt because I am quite the tomboy in real life. Not all boys are dogs. They have some dog-like behavior, but dogs are loyal and kind and loving, at times. There are upsides to being like a dog.

TFK:

How would you use an app like Zoey's?

ZENDAYA:

I would not use it the way she did. I would probably not use an app that changes people because it’s not the best idea, I’ve now realized. I’d want an app that cleaned my room or did my hair or something more like that.

TFK:

What’s your favorite real-life app right now?

ZENDAYA:

I like anything that edits pictures, like Camera+, where you can edit and have fun, because I love Instagramming.

TFK:

What was it like working with Spencer?

ZENDAYA:

Spencer was awesome. I’ve known Spencer for a little while, but we definitely bonded more when we got to work on the movie together. He’s super cool and awesome, and he’s really talented and very funny. His character and my character have a good chemistry as well.

TFK:

How is his character, Jackson, different from other boys in the movie?

ZENDAYA:

Well, he doesn’t fart on Zoey, for one. He’s smarter, he’s more intellectual, and he’s finally the one calm, grounded thing in her life. She finds a little peace and stability in him, so I think that’s why she doesn’t really use the app on him.

TFK:

What was it like getting covered in chocolate sauce for one memorable scene?

ZENDAYA:

Well, it was not chocolate sauce, I’ll tell you that. It had chocolate sauce in it, but also something else so it looked better on camera. It smelled like soy sauce. It was gross! I literally had them hose me down on the lawn when we were done.

Spencer Boldman

TFK:

What's your character, Jackson, like?

BOLDMAN:

Jackson is like the Johnny Depp of the school. He’s really cool. He’s not part of a clique. He doesn’t really fit in anywhere. That was really fun for me to be able to play. He really grounds Zoey’s character, and they start to like each other. With the craziness of the app, he is able to show her that the app is a bad thing.

TFK:

Did you relate to Jackson?

BOLDMAN:

Absolutely. I feel personally more like Jackson than any character I’ve ever played. It was really cool to [play someone different from my] Lab Rats character, who is crazy and goofy and fun.

TFK:

Do you have a favorite real-life app?

BOLDMAN:

I really like Shazaam because I never know the words to songs or the artist. I like games too, like Tetris and Where’s My Water?

TFK:

You have a golden retriever, Jack. Is he well trained, or does he need a training app?

BOLDMAN:

He needs a training app. He’s two years old, and I spoil him too much, probably. He’s like my best friend, I love him, but he definitely needs it. But he’s a puppy too, so he’s still in that phase. It’s really fun.

TFK:

What’s coming up next for Lab Rats, which is in its third season?

BOLDMAN:

A lot of intense things happen this season, but obviously it still maintains the comedy. There are a lot of cool new abilities, we go on new missions, but there’s a lot of drama with Krane. I think fans are going to be really excited to check it out.

TFK:

What would you say to kids to encourage them to watch Zapped?

BOLDMAN:

It’s such a funny movie and it reminds me of the Disney Channel Original Movies I grew up with. It’s really simple and about the story and character and relationships. It’s not a boy or a girl movie: It’s both.
