He's king of the pumpkin patch! Leonardo Urena, 43, of Napa, has squashed the competition at the Half Moon Bay giant pumpkin contest, in California. His monstrous gourd weighed in at 1,704 pounds, setting a new state record. The event, which took place on October 10, attracted farmers from all over the West Coast. Urena took home a grand prize of $11,224—that's $6 per pound, plus a $1,000 bonus for setting a state record. “Every year is a challenge,” he says. He credits good soil and seeds—and his family’s support—for the win.
