Super Mario 3D World

NINTENDO OF AMERICA

Game tested on Nintendo Wii U (Rated E)

What has that evil Bowser done this time? He’s captured the fairy-like Sprixie Princesses and locked them in jars! It’s up to you to reach Bowser’s castle in each of the seven worlds to free the fairies. For the first time since 1988’s Super Mario Bros. 2, Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Toad are all playable characters in one game, which can be played with up to four players. Super Mario 3D World also features the debut of a new power-up costume: a cat! Find a bell, and your character will transform into a cute feline. This cat can climb walls, lash out at enemies, and even climb the end-of-level flagpoles to the top to earn an extra life.

What will kids like about this game?

Fans of the Super Mario Bros. series will enjoy this refreshing 3D update on the classic side-scrolling platform games. The 3D world allows players more freedom to explore, while each level contains fun surprises and new challenges that make it hard to put down the controller.

What tips would you give other players?

If you see a double cherry, grab it. Your character will multiply! Use your cloned characters to gather more coins or solve challenging puzzles. Head for a corner of the game board if you need to gather your scattered clones. But watch out—the clones will disappear if hurt! Also, don’t forget to look for the three green stars hidden in each level.

Wii Party U

NINTENDO OF AMERICA

Game tested on Nintendo Wii U (Rated E)

Are you ready to party? Break out Wii Party U, which features more than 80 mini-games for up to five players at a time. The game box even includes a Wii Remote Plus controller. Some of the games use the Wii U GamePad's features to add variety. In the game-show-style mini-game Name The Face, a player is prompted to take a selfie making a face (such as “holding in a sneeze”) using the GamePad’s camera, and other players must guess the face by selecting a multiple-choice option with a Wii Remote.

What will kids like about this game?

Wii Party U is designed to be enjoyed by a room full of people, so it’s perfect for gatherings of family and friends of all ages. It’s easy to take turns, and non-players can help out in many mini games. The game’s various play options, including game-board-based competitions and cooperative modes, provide hours of entertainment.

What tips would you give other players?

While this game is best enjoyed with a large group, if you are playing solo or with one other player, try one of Wii Party U’s tabletop games in GamePad Party mode. These games, which include Tabletop Baseball and Animal Match-Up, use only the Wii U GamePad, so they can be played with the TV off. The box even includes a stand to balance the controller on a table.

The game brings together Mario and Sonic, plus other classic characters like Donkey Kong, Princess Peach, Dr. Eggman, and more, to play various Winter Olympic events. Games include both real events—like Ski Jumping Large Hill, Figure Skating Pairs, and debut-event Snowboard Slopestyle—and dream events—like Roller Coaster Bobsleigh and Hole-in-One Curling.

What will kids like about this game?

Winter sports fans will enjoy getting to compete in a variety of events as their favorite characters to earn virtual medals. Players will also learn more about some of the sports and event spaces that will be featured at the Sochi 2014 Games.

What tips would you give other players?

If you want to see the tutorials for each event, start out playing solo in Single Match mode or Medley Mania mode—they don’t appear automatically in Legendary Showdown mode or when playing multiplayer.
