Welcome to Gravity Falls, Oregon, the most isolated and woodsy place on the map! Twelve-year-old twins, Dipper [Jason Ritter] and Mabel [Kristen Schaal] Pines, find themselves in the tiny town of Gravity Falls during summer vacation. They are visiting their Great Uncle Stan. But before they’ve even settled in, the siblings discover all is not what it seems in the town, where strange occurrences aren’t so unusual.

In tonight’s episode, titled “The Golf War,” Mabel is tired of being belittled by her snooty archenemy, Pacifica. In an attempt to end Pacifica’s reign of embarrassment, Mabel confronts her in the ultimate challenge. They play a game of mini-golf. Will Mabel live up to Pacifica’s high standards at last? Tune in to Disney XD at 9:30 PM/ET to find out in one epic game of put-put!

TFK Kid Reporter Amelia Compton caught up with Ritter and Schaal at Castle Park mini-golf course in Los Angeles, California to see who is really the champion of the sport. Ritter turned out to be the king of mini-golf, though Schaal and Amelia did fairly well too.

Ritter is no stranger to Castle Park. He’d been coming since he was a kid. Schaal and Amelia joked about how he had probably been coming every night to practice. He got three holes-in-one!

Check out the Q&A to find out what Schaal and Ritter had to say about their kooky characters and tonight’s episode.

TFK:

What do you enjoy most about playing Mabel?

KRISTEN SCHAAL:

I enjoy how carefree she is. How fun and loving she is. She embraces her goofiness. She’s going to grow up to be a strong woman.

TFK:

What do you enjoy most about playing Dipper?

JASON RITTER:

I like that he’s constantly trying to figure out mysteries. That’s something that I like to do; break codes and get to the deeper meaning. I do cryptograms.

TFK:

So you and Dipper are similar?

RITTER:

Yeah. I even had a hat I wore everyday from when I was eight until I was seventeen. That’s another thing Dipper and I have in common.

SCHAAL:

The same hat?

RITTER:

Yeah!

TFK:

Do you do anything to get into character?

SCHAAL:

I could begin the day in a bad mood, but once I start playing Mabel, I’m in a good mood. I get happy and excited.

RITTER:

I try to make sure that my voice is high enough in the car on the way there. There are some songs I try to sing along to. Some female singers and I try to hit those notes. I also just try to remember what it was like to be a kid.

TFK:

Can you relate to your characters in any way?

SCHAAL:

She’s goofy; I’m goofy. She’s sweet and loves boy bands. I love boy bands. I used to love New Kids On The Block.

RITTER:

I remember being 12 years old. You’re almost a teenager and you don’t know exactly how you fit in. I remember being generally nervous and itchy and sweaty, all that. And I love my family, my sister and brother. And Dipper loves Mabel as well.

TFK:

What can we expect from your characters in season 2?

RITTER:

Dipper gets really into solving the mysteries of Gravity Falls. They meet creepier and scarier monsters. I think one of the exciting things about this season is that the mystery definitely progresses. We finally get some answers.

SCHAAL:

Mabel is up to her old tricks.

RITTER:

She’s super into matchmaking this season.

TFK:

What about the show do you think appeals to kids?

SCHAAL:

The bright colors. The sweaters.

RITTER:

The sounds.

SCHAAL:

I think people take for granted how smart kids are and I think the show’s really smart.

RITTER:

I completely agree. I think a lot of cartoons pander to what they think kids can understand. But kids are way smarter than that. Gravity Falls respects them enough to put these really subtle clues in and say we know you’ll find them.

How does Mabel feel about her chances of winning the golf game?

SCHAAL:

She feels good. One thing Mabel is overly confident about is her skills. She’s trained for it. Pacifica needs to be schooled and she needs some humbleness. She needs to be served some humble pie.

RITTER:

A couple of servings!

SCHAAL:

She may be rich, but she is hungry for humble pie!

TFK:

Why should kids watch Gravity Falls?

RITTER:

I think it has a lot to offer. It’s really funny. It’s spooky. I think that the relationships are realistic for a cartoon. You can tell that the characters really care about each other. If you are a fan of mysteries like I am, then this is the show for you.
