TFK Kid Reporter Rylan Daniels previews the new Disney Infinity game system
I recently previewed one of the most amazing video game systems ever created. It’s called Disney Infinity. It brings to life a completely new kind of game universe where players create stories and interact with many Disney characters.
I met with executives John Vignocchi and Ryan Rothenberger of Disney Interactive. Both have worked on Disney Infinity for the last three years. They let me try out the games just as the system was about to be released. Watch a video from my visit below.
“Back in the day, you would go see a movie, and then play the game,” Vignocchi said. “Now, kids want to see the movie, and then go on new adventures with the characters from the film. That’s what we’ve tried to do with Disney Infinity.”
Here is how the system works. First, you place one of several figures on a device called the “Disney Infinity Base.” The character appears on the screen! Once you choose your character, you can play in either of two different modes: “Play Sets” or “Toy Box.”
Introducing Play Sets
“Play Sets” include the worlds of five different Disney films: Pirates of the Caribbean, The Incredibles, Monsters University, Cars, and The Lone Ranger. Each play set is a whole new game. Whether you are racing in Cars, or sword fighting in Pirates of the Caribbean, you’re going to have a lot of fun!
“For the most part, all the roles are reprised by the actors who actually played the character in the movie,” Vignocchi told TFK.
The best part about “Play Sets” mode? The adventures are different from those in the films. You don’t just go on missions and dangerous quests. You can do whatever you want, especially in “Toy Box” mode.
What’s in the Toy Box?
“Toy Box” is a place where you can build your own world out of the “toys” you collect while playing in “Play Sets.” The toys include items like the shrink gun, Cinderella’s carriage, and Buzz Light year’s jetpack.
What’s the difference between “Toy Box” and “Play Sets?” Any character from any movie can play in “Toy Box!” That’s not the case in “Play Sets.” For example, Sulley, from Monsters University, can’t enter the western world of The Lone Ranger in “Play Sets.”
“Think of ‘Toy Box’ as an open world sandbox,” Rothenberger said. “Your imagination is the only limitation.”
Now, to make your game experience even more awesome, I have two words: power discs.
Power discs come in two different shapes: hexagons and circles. The hexagon-shaped power discs change the surroundings in “Toy Box” mode. Let’s say you have a hexagon-shaped power disc with a picture of Wreck-it-Ralph on it. Put the disc on the Disney Infinity Base, and everything from trees to racetracks change to look like they are part of the Sugar Rush arcade game from Wreck-it-Ralph. Circular power discs give a chosen character a special ability or power.
After playing the games in the Disney Infinity system, I became a real fan of this exciting new form of gaming. I especially liked that players can create their own stories in “Toy Box” by combining characters, environments and all sorts of gadgets. You will also be pleased to know that Disney Infinity will work on Xbox360, PS3, Wii, Wii-U, 3DS, PC and online, as well as on smart devices, including tablets and mobile phones.
With all of its great characters, variations and amazing visuals, Disney Infinity is sure to be a hit. The game system is already available in stores. So what are you waiting for? Get ready to travel to Disney Infinity and beyond!
