It wouldn't be the summer movie season without some superheroes. But Thor gives us a slightly unusual one. The film is based on the Marvel Comics character and the God of Thunder from Norse (Scandinavian) mythology. Thor (Hemsworth) is a god from the realm of Asgard who defies his father, the King of Thor (Hopkins), when he wages a battle against the Frost Giants of Jotunheim. After having to be saved by the King during the battle, Thor is banished to Earth without his powers as punishment for his arrogance.

The mighty Thor must now learn the meaning of humility on Earth. To regain his abilities, he'll have to prove he has what it takes to be a true leader—and to be worthy of yielding the powerful hammer, Mjolnir. He gets some help from the humans he meets on Earth, including scientist Jane Foster (Portman), her mentor Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård), and Jane's assistant, Darcy Lewis (Dennings).

Did You Know?

Thor will be back next summer, but this time he'll be sharing the screen. Chris Hemsworth is set to reprise the role of Thor in Marvel Studio's The Avengers, which brings together several Marvel superheroes, including Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). The Avengers is scheduled to hit theaters May 2012.
