TIME For Kids gets the scoop on the Radio Disney Music Awards in Los Angeles, California
April 27 was a big day for many of Disney's hottest stars. Zendaya, Cody Simpson, the girl group Fifth Harmony, and many other celebrities walked the red carpet at the Radio Disney Music Awards in Los Angeles, California. The awards honor the most popular musical acts, as chosen by fans in an online vote.
"The Radio Disney Music Awards are special,” Cameron Boyce told TFK Kid Reporter Gloria Choi. He plays Luke Ross on the Disney show Jessie. “This is a great chance for everyone from Disney to have fun together and bond with the fans."
Selena Gomez, One Direction, Justin Timberlake, Demi Lovato, and Fifth Harmony all won big at the Radio Disney Music Awards. Song of the Year went to Selena Gomez's "Come and Get It." One Direction won Best Music Group. Justin Timberlake won Best Male Artist, and Demi Lovato won Best Female Artist. The awards honored Fifth Harmony with Breakout Artist of the Year and their song “Me & My Girls” won Best Song to Rock Out to with Your BFF.
"We love our fans for their continuous support and kindness,” said Camila Cabello of Fifth Harmony. “To all our fans, thank you for everything you have dedicated to us."
Other winners included Becky G. for Best New Artist and Zendaya for Artist with the Best Style. Ariana Grande, who had three top 5 singles for a combined 73 weeks, received the Radio Disney Chart Topper Award. And the popular song "Let It Go" from the widely adored Disney movie Frozen also picked up an award.
On the red carpet, Disney stars voiced their opinions on who should take home Radio Disney Music Awards. Olivia Holt, best known for playing Kim on Disney XD’s Kickin’ It, predicted Ariana Grande would win Best New Artist. “It’s hard to choose because there are so many great artists out there,” Holt told TFK. “But I’m going with Ariana Grande. She has such a unique voice.”
Dove Cameron, best known for her role in Disney’s Liv and Maddie, predicted correctly that “Let It Go” from the movie Frozen would win big. "The song has become so popular and everyone loves it,” said Cameron.
Stars also named pop band R5 and singers Olivia Holt and Zendaya as their favorite contenders for the night.
But the ceremony isn’t all about winning awards. G. Hannelius of the Disney Channel show Dog with a Blog said it best: "The Radio Disney Music Awards are a great bonding experience for everyone,” she told TFK. “Fellow Disney people meet up with each other, and fans can meet their favorite stars. All in all, it's a happy mood, and it feels great to share that with everyone around me."
