Meet Republican presidental candidates Jon Huntsman and Rick Perry
NAME: Jon Huntsman
BIRTH DATE: March 26, 1960 (age 51)
BIRTHPLACE: Palo Alto, California
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Huntsman served as the governor of Utah from 2005 to 2009. He has held positions in the administrations of four U.S. Presidents. Most recently, President Barack Obama selected Huntsman to serve as the U.S. ambassador to China. Huntsman resigned from this position last year to pursue his campaign. He has helped lead his family’s successful business, Huntsman Corporation. He and his wife, Mary Kaye, have seven children.
IN HIS WORDS: "The issue is going to be trust in the 2012 election. People want to know your core. They want to know you have a consistent, predictable core," he said in New Hampshire on January 3. "I haven’t been on three sides of all the issues. I ran a state that was Number 1 in job creation. I’ve lived overseas four times…The kind of experience I bring is unlike anyone else in the race."
NAME: Rick Perry
BIRTH DATE: March 4, 1950 (age 61)
BIRTHPLACE: Haskell, Texas
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Perry has been the governor of Texas since 2000. He has held this position longer than anyone else. From 1991 to 1999, Perry held other top state positions. He was a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1985 to 1991, and earlier he served in the U.S. Air Force. Perry has written two books. He and his wife, Anita, have two children.
IN HIS WORDS: "I’ll suggest to you, we’ve got to send an outsider to Washington, D.C., that is willing to stand up to all those special interests," Perry told a crowd in Iowa on December 11.
