Should animals be used in films?

People are concerned about the treatment of animals in film, both on camera and behind the scenes. Should animals work in Hollywood?

March 23, 2012

Animals have been part of Hollywood since film's early days. Some of the first moving images ever recorded are of horses galloping. But for decades, the safety of animal actors had little or no regulation. Horses and other creatures were regularly pushed to exhaustion or put in dangerous scenes.

In the 1940s, the Motion Picture Association of America prohibited cruel and hazardous practices for animal actors. The AHA opened a Hollywood office to review productions. Today, the group keeps tabs on about 2,000 film and TV productions per year.

But the debate over the use of animals in entertainment rages on. What do you think? Should animals play a role in Hollywood? Cast your vote in the poll below.
